The Attorney General's Office (FGR) has raised the death toll from a car bomb explosion outside the Community Police station in Coahuayana, Michoacán, and announced the start of investigations. The events occurred on Saturday morning, around 11:40 local time, when a vehicle with a person inside exploded on Rayón Avenue, in the Centro neighborhood. The driver died at the scene, two more people died in the regional hospital, and six others were injured. The FGR also stated that it has launched investigations to find those responsible for these incidents by sending experts in explosives to the scene. Earlier, the government of Michoacán confirmed that the explosion occurred less than 100 meters from the Coahuayana city hall, a municipality mainly dedicated to fishing and the production of bananas and papaya. Meanwhile, the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) is determining whether the deceased or injured are local residents or members of the Community Police, which performs public security functions but does not have official recognition from the Government of Michoacán. The explosion caused severe damage to at least 10 buildings, several of them commercial premises, as well as to a dozen vehicles parked in the area. Recall that the Community Police is led by Héctor Zepeda Navarrete, alias 'Commander Teto', identified as a former member of the self-defense groups that emerged in 2014 to combat the then-narco-cartel known as the 'Knights Templar'. The government of Michoacán has Civil Guard (State Police) groups in Coahuayana, which operate in coordination with the National Guard, the Mexican Army, and the Navy. Michoacán has 270 kilometers of coastline on the Mexican Pacific, distributed in the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Aquila, and Coahuayana, where the Secretariat of the Navy maintains constant operations at sea due to it being a route for cocaine trafficking from South America. The Secretariat of the Navy has identified that there is a strong confrontation on the coast of Michoacán between the Community Police of Aquila and Coahuayana and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Since November 10, Mexico has reinforced security in Michoacán following the assassination of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, who was attacked during a public event on the Day of the Dead.
